The Japanese Constitutional Democratic Party, known in Japanese as Rikken Minshutō, is a center-left political party in Japan. It was established in October 2017 by Yukio Edano as a split from the Democratic Party, which was the main opposition party at the…   time. The formation of the Constitutional Democratic Party came in the wake of the Democratic Party's decision not to field candidates in the 2017 general election, instead opting to cooperate with the Party of Hope, led by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. However, Edano's faction sought to maintain a clear, progressive identity, leading to the creation of the Constitutional Democratic Party.<br /><br />The party's values and policies are rooted in liberal and progressive principles, with a strong emphasis on protecting constitutional democracy in Japan. It advocates for the protection of individual rights and freedoms, opposition to the revision of Japan's pacifist constitution (particularly Article 9, which renounces war), and the promotion of social welfare policies.
