The Japanese Democratic Party, known in Japan as the Minshutō, has been a significant political entity in Japan's post-war political landscape. It was officially formed in 1998 through the merger of several opposition parties, aiming to challenge the long-standing dominance of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Over the years, the Democratic Party has undergone various mergers, splits, and rebrandings, reflecting the fluid nature of Japan's political dynamics. It has also been vocal about reducing Japan's reliance on nuclear energy, especially in the aftermath of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, advocating for a shift towards renewable energy sources.

In terms of foreign policy, the Democratic Party has advocated for a more balanced approach to Japan's international relations.
