I am not familiar with any evidence suggesting the death penalty provides a major deterrent. In that case, the arguments in favor of it would have to be about the justness of it, not the efficacy. And it simply does not seem just to treat life itself as the kind of thing that can be taken away from someone for a wrongdoing, even if they murdered people.
