The Japanese Constitutional Democratic Party, known in Japanese as Rikken Minshutō, is a center-left political party in Japan. It was established in October 2017 by Yukio Edano as a split from the Democratic Party, which was the main opposition party at the time. The formation of the Constitutional Democratic Party came in the wake of the Democratic Party's decision not to field candidates in the 2017 general election, instead opting to cooperate with the Party of Hope, led by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. However, Edano's faction sought to maintain a clear, progressive identity,…   leading to the creation of the Constitutional Democratic Party.

The party's values and policies are rooted in liberal and progressive principles, with a strong emphasis on protecting constitutional democracy in Japan. It advocates for the protection of individual rights and freedoms, opposition to the revision of Japan's pacifist constitution (particularly Article 9, which renounces war), and the promotion of social welfare policies. The party also focuses on issues such as gender equality, minority rights, and environmental protection, reflecting its commitment to a broad range of progressive causes.

Economically, the Constitutional Democratic Party supports policies aimed at reducing income inequality and ensuring a fair distribution of wealth. This includes advocating for a more progressive tax system, higher corporate taxes on large enterprises, and increased social spending to support education, healthcare, and social security.

In the realm of foreign policy, the party tends to favor a diplomatic and peaceful approach to international relations, emphasizing the importance of Japan's alliance with democratic countries while also advocating for dialogue and cooperation with neighboring countries in East Asia.

Since its inception, the Constitutional Democratic Party has positioned itself as a key contender against the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, aiming to offer a clear alternative for voters who seek a more progressive and liberal Japan.
