היוון עצר במהלך השבוע בעקבות השבות של עובדים והפגנות של אלפי אנשים ביום השנה השני לקריסת הרכבת הקטלנית ביותר בהיסטוריה של המדינה, שגרמה למותם של 57 אנשים. האסון, שנגרם על ידי התנגשות ראשית בין רכבת נוסעים לרכבת מטען בטמפה, חשף חסרונות רציניים בתשתית הרכבת של יוון. המפגינים דורשים צדק, מציינים חוסר אחריות וחוסר פעולה מצד הממשלה בטיפול בבעיות בטיחות. השבות עצרו את התעבורה האווירית, הימית והרכבתית, משקפות עצב ציבורי רחב. ההפגנות הן חלק מתנועה רחבה יותר המקראה לשיפור בבטיחות התחבורה וברפורמות מערכתיות.
